I grew a plant out for seed, and was wondering if there is a drying period for the seeds before I use them? The reason I ask is I tried to start a few with no luck. The seeds are fresh, and 1 out of 12 popped. They look like they should be good?

Yes 1 out of 12! I did not soak them. I started 6 in peat pucks and 6 using the paper towel method. 1 in the peat puck germinated.

Those beans look ok.
How long do you germ them for. It can be as short as 12 - 18hrs to 10 days before some pop.. I've had some long ass waits for some, and opposite for others.

Starting in peat pucks is hardest IMO unless you are sure of the beans as you have to keep rooting around looking for growth, or just stare at a peat puck for days waiting.

a lot say you can plant the seed as soon as its fell off the plant ,,,,but like twisty said it can some times take up to 10 days for some seed to germinate ,but most show a small tail after two days in paper  towel ...... and welcome to skool Tom ,,,peace,,mac,..

Yea, I've had seed show growth after only 48hrs in paper towels. That's why I'm a little concerned. I guess I need to be  patent.

Are they in a warm place.

I keep giving beans to a neighbor and she's always saying they didn't take. I go check and place she keeps them its cool.

Not sure where you are or temps you have but that can stop them from starting if too cool.

They absolutely need to dry out first.
I found at least six weeks sitting in a open bowl on my dresser was about right, moisture is bad when sealing and storing seeds of most cultivars.

I prefer old ass beans. They seem to pop better and drop helmets easier...IMO.

I've used beans that are decades old with better results than many newer ones.

The Jamaican plant I grew they were almost 20 yrs old.

Could try soaking them to see if that speeds things up, otherwsie might just have to let them  "cure" a bit longer.

Are the dark seeds hard or do they have a bit of give in them if you squeeze them?

The one that did pop, I had to pull the shell off.

Some take sandpaper and lightly sand alone seam on bean. Can try that in a few vs 24 hr soak.

Doing well..

If I can make 2 suggestions.

1.. When you pot beans/seedlings only fill pot about 2/3 full with soil. As seedling starts to grow & usually stretch add soil and cover bottom leaves with dirt. That will help cut down plant stretch at bottom..

When I plant germed beans I only fill cup 1/2 way.. then back fill and by time soil is at top of cup they have good roots and sturdy, so easy to transplant into a 2/3 soil filled bigger pot. I always like room to add soil at bottom.. Also good for support against leaning etc that way.

2.. Avoid any glass pots. Roots don't like even reg light. If under HPS etc it can stress them..
