hard to call.. For me depends on what sort of music.

John McLaughlin from Mahavishnu Orchestra was considered best.

Then Alvin lee 10 Yrs after was said best, fastest.. also

Roy Buchanan too...

Jimmy page

I'd have to pick Jimmy page.. he worked on everything from Engelbert Humperdinck ..to Tom Jones and sound track for Death Wish movie , Yardbirds, Zep..

he sure as shit made it look easy.

Today's best is Josh Homme, I'd say. He has surpassed Page in ability.

Hendrix is in that group of things like best bands/groups ever..
Beatles, Stones,  are givens, even if you don't like them. What they did is way beyond reproach. Like Simon and Garfunkel, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Led Zepplin.. so ahead of the times and you can unplug any and they'd still blow you away..lol

Some musicians get props automatically.

I would include him..

When you go waaaaay back you have Elton John, Clapton, Rod Stewart, Long John Baldry.. Way before Gasoline Alley days where there was a UK clique that can be traced back even before Beatles became the rage.

I'm talking 1963 ish.
I can't remember name of an LP they did but do remember listening to it.

I have to disagree from a musician point of view he was great, uber talent, BUT it is acquired taste.
I remember seeing him in concert mid Heroin days and after show he went to walk off stage and walked up to wall of speakers and there was no way offstage... his roadie grabbed him and walked him off stage, it was a sad sight that he was so buzzed, but he came out 10 min later and did Layla and everyone just freaked.

That show sticks in my mind as we were tripping as usual at shows but GF had dropped/lost ticket... I walked back to car and found it under front tire...Seems she dropped it getting out of car and wind had blown it under tire where it stuck.... talk about luck..
